BitTorrent是由布萊姆·科亨與BitTorrent公司開發，是全球第一套基於BitTorrent協定的點對點檔案上載/下載軟體（也就是BitTorrent用戶端），由於源自官方而被暱稱為「主流」（Mainline）。

原始的BitTorrent以Python語言編成，3.2版以前的原始碼基於MIT許可證釋出；4.x版與5.x版的原始碼基於BitTorrent開放原始碼許可證（一個Jabber開放原始碼許可證的改作版）發布，5.3版被重新以GPL發布；自6.0版起，BitTorrent成為µTorrent的改名版，因此不再開放原始碼，並僅支援Windows與Mac OS X 10.5.x版。
